The “problem” is that Puerto Rico (allegedly) owes a lot of money.
The deeper problem is that Puerto Rico is a colony, and no amount of debt negotiation or re-structuring will fix this.
After 117 years of colonization, Puerto Rico is in a state of absolute dependence on the US. Even as an island, in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, it is prohibited from developing its own shipping industry.
MSNBC wondered about this last week, and invited three people to talk about it: Nelson Denis, the author of War Against All Puerto Ricans, Julio R. Varela, the founder of Latino Rebels, and Georgetown University Professor Stephen Lerner.
They joined Dorian Warren on his show Nerding Out, to discuss the financial crisis in Puerto Rico. The title of the show was “What is going on in Puerto Rico?”

This year, 1965, marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Don Pedro Albizu Campos. Fifty years after Don Pedro’s death, his prophecies are all coming true. Here are two of them:
#1: With respect to Puerto Rico, the US wants the birdcage, not the bird.
Two birds fly to Orlando
#2: The only time the US will pay any attention to Puerto Rico, is when Puerto Rico becomes a great Problem.
