MURDER IN SONG: WHERE THE WILD ROSES GROW-NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS AND KYLIE MINOGUE (1995)

I promised I would feature Where the Wild Roses Grow” for someone who commented that it was the ultimate murder ballad; I just can’t remember who it was. They may be right; the song is a haunting and morbid tale of ‘boy meets girl, falls in love, takes her to the river for a presumably romantic time and bashes her head in with a rock, forever sealing her fate and cursing her with a post-mortem sobriquet that she, as a ghost, does not seem to understand or want. Minogue sings her lines with just the right amount of haunted angst and Cave? Well, Cave sings his lines like the type of guy who would hit a girl over the head with a rock.
